Atkin

We love these small-bodied wonders! Our ‘Forty Seven’ is a lightly built X-braced guitar. It sounds incredible for fingerstyle playing, and also has enough size and punch to make it great for flatpicking as well.
Our scalloped bracing system brings out the best in this smaller body, giving a bass tone that is strong and more commanding than you would expect from an instrument of this size.
Many pre-war examples had “baseball” bat sized necks but we add our standard C-shape Atkin neck.

Also referred to as the Parlor guitar (depending on where you are in the world), this design is among the smallest of acoustic guitar body shapes. 1936 was a great year for the Parlor design and our ‘Thirty Six’ takes inspiration from those very guitars right at the time they became a pivotal part of American Folk and Blues music.
Carefully selected Baked Sitka Spruce is used for the top. Combined with their hand-scalloped bracing, it delivers a tight, bouncy tone that’s perfect for folky fingerpicking and blues-style flatpicking alike.

The Forty Three is both direct and powerful, but with an easy-playing shorter scale length, it’s easy to see why this guitar has been favoured by so many singer-songwriters over the years. The big-bodied slope shoulder shape, combined with our Baked Sitka spruce top and mahogany back and sides, delivers warm mids, solid lows and great definition. It’s a timeless acoustic guitar tone.

Known as the “Wizard of the Strings”, Roy Smeck could play just about any instrument that he laid his hands on – but when it came to guitars, he loved slope shoulder instruments, with a wide nut and 12 frets to the body.
The big, lightly-braced body with a shorter scale length delivers incredible tone: sweetness with power.

Our ASJ model gives off some serious Everly Brothers vibes thanks to the double oversized tortoiseshell pickguard. The body shape is a medium jumbo which gives it plenty of power and volume, but at the same time offers a near perfect balance. The back and sides are figured Maple which together with the Baked spruce top gives the instrument a warm overal tonal character. The C-shaped mahogany neck has 14 frets to the body and is fitted with a bound rosewood fretboard, inlaid with our new Atkin double-diamond pearl position markers. Matching double diamond headstock inlay and Atkin Logo give this headstock a truly unique aesthetic. This guitar is traditionally finished in black but without a Pickguard.

With the new Essential OM, we’re offering 100% Atkin tone – stripped down to the bare essentials!

Each Essential OM sports a North American Sitka spruce top and braced with pre-war scalloped bracing, all of which is baked in house here at Atkin. Mahogany back and sides are complimented by a lightweight mahogany neck with an ebony fingerboard
The OM, or “Orchestra Model” combines a full scale length with a slightly scaled down body – it is narrower and shallower than a “D” style guitar like our White Rice or Essential D. The challenge for all OM builders is to allow for a rich, commanding bass in spite of the smaller, more ergonomic body, and our hand-scalloped bracing and torrified select Sitka top allows us to make this a reality.
This isn’t a slavish vintage copy though: We’ve departed in several ways from the classic pre-war style: A larger top dome, our lifetime-guaranteed neck/body joint, and a two-way truss rod are among the changes, so this isn’t a historical reproduction, but a modern British-made guitar with heaps of mojo!

Our Dust Bowl Series is inspired by some of the depression era guitars of the 1930’s. A lightweight all-mahogany body construction, scalloped braces, and soft-V neck carve that hugs your hand. The 16″ radius Indian Rosewood fingerboard with rounded-over edges makes ‘thumb-overtop’ playing easy and comfortable.
These Dust Bowl guitars have a full, rich and dry voice with enough of a push in the midrange to inspire any ragtime picker, while still giving plenty of warmth and openness across the strings to keep any player happy. It offers that ‘piano-like’ cavernous articulation in the bass end, and a sweet and well-rounded treble.

The Atkin O model offers a deceptively big sound while being attractively compact. The small body, combined with the O’s shorter scale length, makes for an exceptionally comfortable guitar to hold and play. This model is characterised by a clear, focused tone that fingerpickers and flatpickers alike will love.
We offer the O model in two different formats. The Atkin O 12-fret has a slotted headstock and a 12th fret neck joint, providing the traditional looks and sound for this style of guitar. The Atkin O 14-fret has a solid headstock and a 14th fret neck joint, providing all the accessibility of a standard size guitar.

Our OOO-series (pronounced “triple-oh”) guitars are based very closely on the pre-war guitars which are revered by so many players. In the pre-war era there were a lot of spec changes with OOO-series guitars. Rather than give you a full history lesson, we’d like to let you know how we are currently making them at Atkin. Our OOO37 is prized by players who love sweet, singing trebles on a versatile all-rounder.
For our standard Atkin OOO37 without a slotted headstock we build as standard to the following specs:
Specifications
- 15-inch lower bout OM body shape
- 24.9″ short scale length
- 14 frets to the body
- 1 3/4″ (45mm, 2mm wider than our standard)
- Rosewood Back and Side
- Sitka top and red spruce bracing
- Ebony fingerboard and bridge.
Our best-selling model of 2017, the Atkin OM is for many players a “desert island” guitar – if they had to pick just one, this is the one that can do it all!
The OM, or “Orchestra Model” combines a full scale length with a slightly scaled down body – it is narrower and shallower than a “D” style guitar like our White Rice or Essential D. The challenge for all OM builders is to allow for a rich, commanding bass in spite of the the smaller, more ergonomic body, and our hand-scalloped bracing and torrified select Sitka top allows us to make this a reality.
Our OM is popular with fingerstyle guitar players, but in truth it’s a great all-rounder and suits singer-songwriters and folk artists as well.
We’ve departed in several ways from the classic pre-war style: A larger top dome, our lifetime-guaranteed neck/body joint, and a two-way truss rod are among the changes, so this isn’t a historical reproduction, but a modern British-made guitar with heaps of mojo!

As part of our 25th Anniversary celebrations, we have been looking back at all the guitars we have built and everything we have learnt along the way, as well as all those wonderful guitars that came before that inspired us throughout our own journey.
Drawing on those vintage guitars of the Pre-War era, we have reintroduced a V-shaped neck which is in keeping with the original tradition. This really makes the guitar feel and play like those instruments. Baked AAA Adirondack tops are a perfect match, and Madagascan Rosewood provides a great replacement for Brazilian Rosewood which would have been part of the original spec but has since become extremely difficult to ethically source. The colour and grain of Madagascan Rosewood has proven to be as wonderful as its ability to recreate the tones of its Brazilian counterpart. Finish all of this off with accoutrements such as Mother of Pearl inlays and headstock logo inlay and our super thin aged nitro finish, and you have yourself a time-tested formula for success.
We thought about the legendary solo artists who have stood on stages around the world for the last 60 years using classic guitars from the Pre-War era to tell their tales. Our standard OM 37 model has taken so many of these thoughts into account already, but the OM 37 Pre-War is about taking that to the next level.
This very special Historic Series guitar is a loving recreation of Tony Rice’s infamous D28, a guitar previously owned by Clarence White, hence its name – The White Rice! With its instantly recognisable enlarged soundhole and overhanging fretboard, the original guitar is generally agreed to be one of the best sounding D28s in existence. We set out to build a no-compromise Dreadnought that would honour this exceptional guitar and its legendary owners.
While our regular Sitka spruce and East Indian rosewood Dreadnought packs plenty of power, sustain and projection, this guitar is something else. Thanks in part to the oversized soundhole, which lets more air in and out of the guitar, The White Rice combines incredible power – in Alister’s words, “it sounds like a cannon!” – with an openness and resonance that is unique. Accurate in every detail, from the 45mm nut to the detailed custom relic finish, this is not just the ultimate White/Rice tribute but, perhaps, the ultimate Dreadnought.

The most popular steel-string guitar of all time, the dreadnought is a design classic. The Atkin Dreadnought is based on the classic pre-war models of the 1930s. We’ve been building and repairing this style of guitar longer than any other and, as with the J-45, every vintage example we’ve worked on has taught us something different.
With its deep body and scalloped braces, the Atkin Dreadnought puts out an incredibly strong, full sound. It’s one of the biggest sounding guitars we (or anyone else) makes and it really stands out when you’re playing alongside other instruments, live or in the studio.
